Melbourne v Houston

Melbourne

Compared with the average Melburnian, the average Houstonian...

(I will add to this list the more I observe!)

  • says "excuse me" a whole lot more (I think you're supposed to say it whenever you pass in front of someone, and not just when you're pissed off and want them out of your way)
  • says "bless you" when a stranger sneezes
  • is friendlier
  • is more likely to be overweight
  • is less likely to be Asian
  • is more likely to be African American or Latino
  • drives, and does not walk/cycle/catch public transport (this varies depending on what part of town you're in, but the average middle-class person abhors the bus)
  • is maybe more likely to be pregnant? (an early observation - based on seeing about five pregnant women in about 24 hours)
  • is much more overtly respectful of the military
  • is more overtly patriotic, about both their state and their country
  • does not go shopping or hang out in the city centre (the city or 'downtown' as they call it is quite a different story here to Melbourne - it's where people work and don't really do much else)
  • is less interestingly dressed
  • goes to church, and to a very big one, or a very beautiful one (there are a billion churches here, and so many of the church buildings are STUNNING)
  • is about as obsessed with food and eating out (just more likely to be eating Mexican than Italian)
  • is more houseproud
  • is more aggressive and less considerate on the roads
  • uses more, eats more, throws away more
  • volunteers for a charity
  • shakes hands more
  • is more polite
  • gets their nails done more
